Telefonica announced the launch of an in-app payment API for members of its BlueVia developer community, which will enable the creation of apps which support in-app operator billing. The company is working with m-payment specialist Boku to deliver the capabilities, stating that “developers will be able to implement in-app purchasing within minutes.” In a statement, it was said that the launch reinforces BlueVia’s “mission to find new ways for developers to monetise their ideas.”
The operator group is working with Boku, due to its “bank grade mobile payments technology” which, in addition to providing developers with another potential revenue stream, is also said to deliver a better user experience for users. It said that “for Telefonica customers, it means there will be fewer barriers to making in-app purchases, delivering a further boost to developer bottom lines.” The system is said to present developers with “a single contract, a single API and a single set of rules,” making it easier to add in-app billing to software.
According to Jose Valles, head of BlueVia, “in-app payment is a hot topic within the developer community, as all the research suggests it can have a high positive impact on revenue. Mobile operator billing offers a way to charge for goods and services using financial relationships that in some markets are more prevalent than credit cards.”
