Some PC vendors, including Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Dell, reportedly plan to venture into the development of Microsoft's Windows 8-based tablet PCs with the new models likely to be launched in the third quarter of 2012, according to industry sources.

Amazon's launch of the low-priced Kindle Fire has not only triggered a price war among Android-based tablet PC vendors, but has also pushed the vendors to alternative platforms in order to avoid fierce competition, commented the sources.

Motorola Mobility began to market a low-priced version of its Xoom tablet through Best Buy on October 16, the sources indicated.

While Acer and Asustek Computer are expected to continue to roll out Android-based tablets, Dell and Lenovo reportedly will focus on business-use tablets, said the sources, noting that Dell's business tablets will run on Windows, while Lenovo's ThinkPad tablet models will run on Android OS.

Motorola Mobility inked an exclusive partnership with digital music company Spotify, to support the launch of its services in the US. The handset vendor, as Spotify’s mobile device and tablet partner, will be “launching a number of marketing campaigns in the coming weeks to offer its customers coveted early access to Spotify’s on-demand music streaming service.” According to Bill Ogle, CMO of Motorola Mobility: “the collaboration between Motorola and Spotify is the ultimate way to deliver the compelling music choices users are looking for on their mobile device.”

The Spotify service is available as both a free, ad-supported service, as well as on a subscription basis. It is available through both desktop and mobile applications, supporting “devices including Motorola’s latest Android-based smartphones.”

In a statement trumpeting its US launch, the company said that it has “more than 10 million registered users and more than 1.6 million paying subscribers across 7 countries in Europe,” with the US representing its eighth market. It also said it has “a ratio of well over 15 percent paying subscribers to active free users.”

Sony, Samsung and Motorola might watch HP webOS as a Premium Alternative to Android.

Sony, Samsung and Motorola might watch HP webOS as a Premium Alternative to Android.

Hewlett-Packard CEO Léo Apotheker says licensing webOS to third-party handset manufacturers is something the company would certainly entertain.

One conditions was said by Jon Rubinstein: “We might eye a company who wants  to license webOS as unique platform for all their devices. We will not license a partner who launch its devices with Android, Microsoft (Windows Phone) and webOS.
We want a partner who really wants to delivery a very unique ecosystem.”
In a client note this week, Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry makes the case that HP  should license webOS, and comes up with some interesting scenarios to support that argument.

He says that Sony, Motorola and Samsung are growing disillusioned with Google’s Android OS.

They feel there’s too much fragmentation and too little differentiation among Android devices and that companies producing low-end handsets are collapsing the premium market they’d most like to play in.

“They’re starting to realize that their Android devices are no different in the eyes of the customer than a $20 Android Phone from Huawei,” Chowdhry says.

“They’re worried that Android may dilute their global brand as customers put them in the same bucket with Acer, Asus, ZTE, Huawei, and MediaTek.”

And if that’s the case, Sony, Motorola and Samsung might be interested in another mobile OS, one that would preserve their premium brand.

Right time for license  HP webOS ?

It’s a widely acclaimed platform and it’s not fragmented at all.

If the company were to license it to a few select partners, under the right conditions it could extend the operating system’s reach and bolster HP’s revenues.

HP could also define a handful of well-conceived reference designs to which OEM partners must adhere and charge them $50 to $75 per device.

By doing that, HP could keep hardware quality high and position webOS as a premium alternative to Android.

Which may be just what companies like Sony, Motorola and Samsung are looking for.
